Paris is famed the world over as the perfect place for a romantic stay. Certain attractions stand out from the rest - the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe, Notre Dame cathedral - but in actual fact, Paris' charm lies just as much in the elegant architecture of the shops and chic townhouses along its broad boulevards and the half-hidden squares and small parks that grace every corner of the city.
A stay in Paris is a feast for the palate as well as the eyes!
Paris is a centre of the arts in numerous ways. Many will head straight for the city's top galleries, such as the Louvre, the Musée d'Orsay and the Pompidou centre, as well as lesser-known gems like the city's own art collection, housed in the Petit Palais. There is a thriving theatre scene too, not to mention opera, ballet, live music and even stand-up comedy! However, if there is one thing Parisians take very seriously, it's food. Fine dining is just as important in Paris as it is in the rest of France, and the city boasts a large number of Michelin starred establishments. Paris has made its own contribution to French cuisine, with Parisian specialities ranging from onion soup to macarons. Paris is also justly famous for its café culture. Sample a patisserie, an espresso and sit back and enjoy a spot of people-watching - there are few better cities to engage in this past-time than the French capital! The Café de Flore and Les Deux Magots on Boulevard St Germain still exercise a particular fascination for their historic connections with Sartre, Hemingway and Picasso, amongst others. If you worry about overindulging your epicurean side, there's nothing to stop you exploring some of the beautiful countryside that lies just outside the city limits. Regional parks like the Vexin Français and the Haute Vallée de Chevreuse are dotted with quaint villages, woods and stunning pastoral landscapes. An extensive network of well-marked paths means that people of all walking abilities can come and enjoy the wonders of nature. Access by public transport, notably via the RER suburban rail system, is easier than you might think. Alternatively, you could hire a car.
